Nick Patsis is an avid runner. So, he never thought he would oppose any measure that encouraged students to become physically active. But he is among a growing lobby of arts supporters who say a bill meant to give middle school students more physical education could rob them of band, art and other electives. Senate Bill 610 would require students in grades 6 to 8 to take an average of 45 minutes of gym class each day.
The problem is that most middle school students only get two elective periods. If one is taken up by PE, that leaves one other period for foreign language, computer courses and the arts. Some students who do poorly on the FCAT would have no free electives because they are required to take a remedial reading course. For more, see: PalmBeachPost.com
