School boards across the country are choosing to remove the arts. Theater, painting, chorus, dance, band and other such classes may become extinct in high school. When finances are tight, the arts are usually the first courses to go. But when these classes disappear, do schools know what they are removing? |

The life of a student-athlete is a very busy one. It takes hours of commitment, dedication, and stress management—work that often goes underappreciated or overly criticized. Along with the athletes, college sports teams employ a full-time staff that puts in just as many hours. Running alongside these coaches and trainers, however, is another student group that is sometimes unrecognized, but never unheard—the marching band. |

Nick Patsis is an avid runner. So, he never thought he would oppose any measure that encouraged students to become physically active. But he is among a growing lobby of arts supporters who say a bill meant to give middle school students more physical education could rob them of band, art and other electives. Senate Bill 610 would require students in grades 6 to 8 to take an average of 45 minutes of gym class each day. |
